Within
the past 20 years a dramatic change has taken place within
the community and the school district. A large percentage
of housing has shifted from multi-family rental units to individually
owned condominiums. During this process much of the blue-collar
segment has left the city. This triggered a rapid decline
in the total school enrollment. With an overall population
of approximately 38,600, today’s 2,392 student population
is less than one-third of the 7,300 student population of
twenty years ago. Recent increases in early childhood enrollment
numbers point to a reverse trend whereby families with children
are choosing to remain in the community as children become
of school age.

Hoboken City District Narrative
The mission
of the Hoboken Public School District is to provide meaningful,
high-quality programs that promote the physical, social, intellectual,
emotional, and language development of all students. These
programs aim to cultivate in our students a lifelong love
of learning and an enthusiasm to explore the world. Partnerships
with parents and coordination with community resources are
vital ingredients to the success of this mission.
The district
is committed to continuing to provide our students with a
world-class curriculum supported by state-of–the-art
technology in every curricular area, led by a team of dedicated
teachers and administrators. Looking to the future, plans
are in place for a newly-constructed middle-high school campus.
This site will serve as the home for the academically challenging
International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program in grades
6 through 10. The IB Diploma Program will continue to be a
choice for students in grades 11 and 12. It is the district’s
intent to work collaboratively and productively with the International
Baccalaureate Organization in linking curricula with technology.
This joint endeavor will provide our students with digital
access to worldwide resources from their newly-equipped classrooms.
Additionally, all elementary schools are scheduled for renovations
that meet 21st century standards. Collaboration among public
school staff, Stevens Institute of Technology (in particular
the Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education
– CIESE), and community members will bring to the district
educational opportunities using technology in exemplary ways.
CIESE will be involved in providing training for district
staff on effective infusion of technology in each curriculum
area and in promoting innovative, interdisciplinary, project-based
instructional methods.
I invite
you to review the data contained in the Report Card of your
child’s school. This information will enable you to
