Wrapped in Love NICU drive

Our NICU Clothing Drive: A New Meaning

I have had the pleasure of meeting some of you, but for those I have not met, I am Andy’s wife, Kate. When we started the NICU Clothing Drive two years ago we had no idea the deeper meaning it would have for us today.

When our daughter was born last June, we quickly realized something was wrong. Although she was full-term, she was so tiny. She had trouble breathing and feeding. We were told that she would have to be admitted to the NICU. Andy and I held her and kissed her and told her we loved her before they took her away. It was one of the few times in her first three months of life that we would be able to hold her without wires, tubes, and alarms.

The idea for our clothing drive was born from the idea that dressing NICU babies in baby clothing helps parents bond with their little ones. Research shows that parental bonding and closeness benefits long-term outcomes for both parents and babies. As a NICU mom, I can tell you how intimidating and overwhelming the tubes and wires can be. I couldn’t feed her (we had a tube for that), it was difficult to hold her (because of all the tubes and wires), and play was hindered (again, wires). It is hard to not think of my baby as sick or hurting because of the enormity of the medical environment. But, something as simple as putting her in a cute dress or romper gave me that little bit of normalcy I needed. Decorating her bed in a pretty blanket made her crib feel a little more like home. I could see my beautiful baby girl through all of those wires and tubes.

If you have gently used preemie or newborn-sized baby clothes that you can donate to our drive, it would be so greatly appreciated by a mom, dad, grandparent, or aunt of a little one.  To donate please see the information below:
